		+	I created a podcast using the smartboard recorder. I wanted a site that would benefit my parents. They are already familiar with our Copeland School Webpage so I linked it to our first grade site. We have a wonderful media specialist who helps to post anything we need to make a link for. The only problem with not having access ourselves is we have to wait until things get posted. It went well but I was so nervous sitting there by myself. It took 12 attempts to say what I really wanted to say even with a script. I'm sure this willget easier the more I do. I plan to 5 other mini-podcasts to go along with the first one on reading with your child at home. To get there go to the following line,

	I tried using Gabcast last year with my students. Because it uploads the content directly to your blog, it was incredibly easy to use! All I did was dial the number, have my students speak like they were leaving a voicemail and that was it! There were also times that I used the podcast to record myself giving new information, or reviewing old information. (I talk about it more below.) Of course, the school district blocked it, so i was unable to open the podcasts on my blog. I had to go through my tech. facilitator to convince the powers that be to unblock the content. I had my tech facilitator email the lesson plan I used and the link to the content we podcasted. That seemed to do the trick and it was unblocked! I am still not sure if it is blocked for others though. If so, fight it! 		+	I decided to make a mini pod cast about reading with your student at home. I plan to complete 5 other, less than 1 minute, podcasts that will focus on each of the strategies we use in the classroom that could benefit the parents at home. The production of the podcast went smoothly. I opted to use a program that I was familiar with because it can be downloaded easily. I used the Smartboard Recorder to record and list strategies. I was surprised at how long it took me to sound like I was intelligent enough to issue advice. I was so nervous even with a script I keep stumbling over words, omitting details, or repeating myself. I also wanted it to helpful and short so parents might tune in to hear the next one. I also chose to upload the podcast onto our school website which requires an authorized person so I had to wait until the authorized person had time to place my podcast on the website. Overall I think this was a big success and I am looking forward to placing other podcasts on the website. 	Our tech guru sends out a weekly podcast through email that demonstrates a lesson using Notebook software. I find them to be so helpful and informative since I'm just learning how to use my SMARTboard. I also thought since I was out sick the first half of the week, I could have created a podcast for my students demonstrating and describing the assignment I left for them. The students conversed with each other about a book that they have been reading in small groups. They will keep their podcasts going as we read new books throughout the period. We are then loading these podcasts onto their mp3 players and listening to them as an introduction to that book for a new group. 	Learning to create a podcast is something I've been curious about for a while now. After getting this assignment last week, I had a hard time deciding what to do for my podcast. This podcast was for the benefit of my parents instead of the students. We did not allow any parent chaperones on this trip so I wanted to provide them with information and photos of our day. I began the assignment by trying to use [http://www.podomatic.com Podomatic] but after three hours of reading, watching video tutorials and trying to get it to work I gave up. I was also unable to access the website from school due to a block on the site. At home, my sound would not record using the podomatic website. I read on the wiki that others were successful with this site, however I had no luck. I even brought home a microphone from school and still was unsuccessful at getting the sound to record. So, for plan B, I decided to try [http://www.screenjelly.com/ Screen Jelly] and I was so pleased with the outcome. I was able to record my podcast very easily with this website. Since this site records what is on your computer screen I decided to use photos from the field trip as my screen display. I simply created a short PowerPoint slide show with a few photos to play while my podcast was recording. I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. It was very easy to upload my screen jelly creation to my class [http://www.twitter.com/bdkindergarten Twitter Page]. I haven't had any parent comments for my podcast thus far. 		+	This is a podcast that I created to go on our grade level page of our school's homepage. It is all linked to the county's website [4]. The podcast [5] was really easy to do, but I am not abe to link it to our homepage without the help of our media specialist. She is also our technology person and is the only one with access to it. She is great about updating it and putting anything on it that we ask. My podcast was ok, but my sound didn't pick up very well. I used the SMART video recorder and the built in microphone. It sounded fine when i listened to it in my room, but from the sight after it was posted I could barely hear it. Next time I will try using the mic on my life-cam. 	Using a Podcast can really enable me to show my students how to use technology. I created two one using audacity and another using Screen Jelly with a snowball microphone that recently was purchased at our school. This was excellent practice for me since I am going to have my students do a three minute book talk that they will create podcasts for and upload to our website in the future. I use audacity to record a classroom discussion for a sick student. That was fairly easy however, you couldn't hear without the snowball microphone which actually regulates the sounds so they aren't all over the place as far as proximity. Its actually made for podcasting! This is the awesome microphone my technology facilitator ordered. I got my first try at it. I also used Screen Jelly to create a tutorial for my students on how to access/set up their Ning accounts and begin blogging with me! I plan on using this this week for my non-experience Ning users that will need me to repeat directions constantly. I think this will help them follow own their own and process what they are supposed to do better. I also fluffed up some of my smartboard presentations using Four Bees! How neat. I didn't run into any trouble. Things went smoothly. 	I haven't gotten a chance to use some of these things recently in class for my students. I plan on using them later this week and the next. Unfortunately, I have been bogged down by the assessments lately and actually have been working on writing assessments and quarterly assessments for the past week and half or more of classtime. Also, last week we were on a field trip one day and then students had a field trip related project in which they collaborated to create their commercials with Animoto. So although I haven't gotten the chance to try my screen jelly with my students. I expect it to go smoothly. Audacity was wonderful though with my students who have been missing so much class discussion. The parent was really glad that I suggested that because this student had missed so much discussion about writing they needed to catch up with on their assignment. I do think its going to be challenging when working with my students to create a podcast because they aren't good at following directions. 	Fifth grade is a whole different animal. The students realize that they have an opinion at this age and it is my job to help them discover that their is tremendous power in the sharing of what they think with other individuals. So research is key. I always kept research activities going in my classroom, I taught the students how to determine if a site was valid, students were taught to create powerpoints and smartboard lessons to teach others about their findings. Students created desmonstrations on the smartboard to demonstrate math concepts, and webquests were used in science and social studies. We had a mobile lab at school that we used at least three times a week for research, an impact lab where we took ClassScape tests and worked with Education City twice a week, we went to language lab once a week where students worked on Manderin Chineese or Spanish, and we had formal computer training once a week for 50 minutes. My classroom was equipped with 3 personal computers were students could check email, research, or visit kid friendly sites at free time. I also had a Smartboard, airpiner, Elmo, scanner,and two printers for student use. I felt very fortunate to have as much as I did and I felt that my students had ample opportunities to develop their for the middle school leap.		Fifth grade is a whole different animal. 		+	As a student of technology I have grown more in this course than I have in the past ten years as a staff member of Forsyth county schools.

		+	It is difficult to think of all that I have learned in the last few months. I feel much better equipted to share with my students. I feel the best thing I used with my students was the blog/response link on my web page. Because the whole class could be on at the same time (when I reserved the computer on wheels) they could help one another go from site to site to complete their quest for information from the links provided on my site. I was impressed that they could navigate through the steps to respond to me on the blog. This is a skill they will continue to use in and out of school.

		+	The first weeks were intimidating because I misunderstood, I thought I had to sign up for everything right away, which I did. I was signing up and trying to figure things out on my own. The tech autobiography was simple, I knew the bare bones basics and wanted more.

		+	The week of Skype gave me the opportunity I was looking for to get started. I was hoping to see my grandkids this way, but they are too young and won't cooperate. I am not sure if it is my computer or Skype but the images are not as clear as I expected. I was excited when the authors I contacted in Mexico replied and set up a date in March for my class to interact with them. I didn't think it would take so long to actually be able to do a conference call.
		+	I am not happy with Forsyth county technology facilitators, everything I try to do there have a reason why we can't. We are not trained, it is blocked for safety reasons, we don't see a need for that.

		+	Twitter was fun for a while, my parents couldn't, wouldn't use it so it went by the wayside for me.

		+	The online reading was very interesting. I was surprised how the lower reader could do almost as well as the on level/high reader when it came to online reading. That is where the computer skills came in. Being able to navigate around texts made a big difference in getting through the assignments. I found the online reading to be difficult especially the double column, it is not online friendly. I was questioning the ability to make notes while reading but that was addressed in another session.

		+	Getting organized with classroom tools was helpful since we have so much to keep up with now. I signed up for iKeepBookmarks, to keep useful sites convenient. I have a Favorites site on my mail page but this is easier because I don't have to go through all the hoops to get to it. I am still in infant stages of Hotchalk.

		+	The assistive technologies surprized me, who knew there were so many. Simple things that I never thought of as technology, like a special pencil, but someone had to design it for a specific issue. I liked that so many of the programs are free, I wish I knew about these sooner there were several times they would have made parents feel more adequate to be able to help their child, and me too. Write out loud , Read:Outloud, great sites for all of us. The voices reading online are less than desirable but the alternative of nothing is worse. Actualy the annununciation is pretty good for our ELL students.

		+	Using multimedia and sharing files was fun. The kids loved having their pictures taken, and when I showed them my first attempt at video with the garden snapshots they were rearing to go.

	I tried to make a podcast with my students using photostory 3[http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/PhotoStory/default.mspx] which is what our technology specialist recommended. It was fairly simple, but the sound devices didn't work. We worked on it a lot this afternoon to add readings and sound but never figured it out. I plan on trying again tomorrow using a one of the suggested sites with music. One of the questions that parents most frequently had was how to guide their student in reading at home the same way that I guide him/her in reading groups at school. I designed my podcast using podOmatic to explain the strategies that a parent can use in reading with a child at home. Many times parents really want to help, but the only strategy that they know is "sound it out!" They consistently tell their students to do so and then we end up with students who don't try any other strategies except for sound it out! This podcast leads parents through the Davidson County Fix-up strategies that can be used when a student gets to a tough word. 		+	Using a Podcast can really enable me to show my students how to use technology. I created two one using audacity and another using Screen Jelly with a snowball microphone that recently was purchased at our school. This was excellent practice for me since I am going to have my students do a three minute book talk that they will create podcasts for and upload to our website in the future. I use audacity to record a classroom discussion for a sick student. That was fairly easy however, you couldn't hear without the snowball microphone which actually regulates the sounds so they aren't all over the place as far as proximity. Its actually made for podcasting! This is the awesome microphone my technology facilitator ordered. I got my first try at it. I also used Screen Jelly to create a tutorial for my students on how to access/set up their Ning accounts and begin blogging with me! I plan on using this this week for my non-experience Ning users that will need me to repeat directions constantly. I think this will help them follow own their own and process what they are supposed to do better. I also fluffed up some of my smartboard presentations using Four Bees! How neat. I didn't run into any trouble. Things went smoothly. -		+	I haven't gotten a chance to use some of these things recently in class for my students. I plan on using them later this week and the next. Unfortunately, I have been bogged down by the assessments lately and actually have been working on writing assessments and quarterly assessments for the past week and half or more of classtime. Also, last week we were on a field trip one day and then students had a field trip related project in which they collaborated to create their commercials with Animoto. So although I haven't gotten the chance to try my screen jelly with my students. I expect it to go smoothly. Audacity was wonderful though with my students who have been missing so much class discussion. The parent was really glad that I suggested that because this student had missed so much discussion about writing they needed to catch up with on their assignment. I do think its going to be challenging when working with my students to create a podcast because they aren't good at following directions. The students had to find two important facts about the tribe and wrote a short report on their it. Then they presented the information about their ~~tribes~~. I filmed them presenting and made it into a podcast. I have embedded them into my school webpage [http://sites.google.com/site/mrscaldwellsclasssite/home/our-podcasts] so that the parents can view them. The students were very excited about the idea. They practiced their presentations and did a very good job presenting. I really did not experience any difficulties everything went well. I am very happy with the end product. I think this is a great tool to show the parents what we have been learning about in the classroom. It is also a way for the students to show their knowledge of a subject in a different way. You could use podcasts for so many different things from giving direction, how to video, presentation or just information for the parent. Wanting to use video, I explored podomatic and found it very easy to navigate. 		+	I located the [http://www.bluesoleil.com/download/Default.aspx bluesoleil] software. It was a little pricey, $29, but I had to have it. Using [http://penteractive.us/pentabulous/ pentabulous] software from www.penteractive.us to calibrate the range of the board for the wiimote to pick up, I was in business. This was easier to download than the Johnny Lee software. I was so excited that it worked when everything finally came together. But the real test would be using it in the classroom. On Monday morning I hooked it up at school and IT WORKED!! My class took to it like a duck to water. We went to one of our favorite sites, [http://www.spellingcity.com spelling city] and played Hangmouse and learned to play Unscramble together. So I talked nice to my computer guru husband and our school librarian and they both agreed to help me. The librarian let me bring home a projector and she had an extra pen I could borrow. We will get the wii remote and blue tooth adapter and put this together tomorrow. 		+	I was attempting to figure out an authentic way to use a podcast for what's going on in my classroom right now. We are doing novel studies at the moment, so eventually I think it would be fun to do some podcasts about literary terms, character analysis, and student understandings of the text. However, with the time crunch, I decided to use screenjelly to do a podcast of basic info about our upcoming field trip to Betsy Jeff Penn 4H Center. I'm going to post it on my school webpage, in hopes that it might answer questions that I've heard repeatedly from parents and students. Screenjelly was super easy to use. HOWEVER... I kept tripping over my words and having to stop & re-record. It would have been nice if there were a rewind button so I could simply re-record segments, rather than the whole thing. (I'll have to check out some of the other sites to see if that is an option with them.)

	My students studied about Native Americans last week. So to show what they had learned I put them in groups and they were given a tribe. The students had to find two important facts about the tribe and wrote a short report on their it. Then they presented the information about their tribes. I filmed them presenting and made it into a podcast. They practiced their presentations and did a very good job presenting. I really did not experience any difficulties everything went well. I am very happy with the end product. You could use podcasts for so many different things from giving direction, how to video, presentation or just information for the parent. This week in science we are studying the water cycle and our science vocabulary words are related to the water cycle. 	I had heard of a podcast but was not sure what it was or how to do one. I was surprised about how easy it was to make. I watched the how to video and it was very informative. I chose to use Podomatic. The one problem I had was the same problem Odessa had. I wanted to preview my recording first but it would not allow you do that. Other than that I found it very easy to use and I would use it again. I made a recording of an introduction using the recording option and then I uploaded videos that I recorded on my camera. Uploading was very easy and did not take a great deal of time. I made a recording of an introduction using the recording option and then I uploaded videos that I recorded on my camera. Uploading was very easy and did not take a great deal of time. 		+	There are times when I feel like I am way behind technologically, and this is one of those times. I have explored my various options, and I decided to make a podcast telling my students the part of a cinquain. I have created the sound file in [http://www.audacity.com Audacity], but have had some issues installing LAME on my OS. As soon as that happens, I will upload my cast to [http://www.podbean.com PodBean] and see what happens. I plan on installing the widgett on my wikispaces site that I am working on for my classroom. 	I had never done a podcast before, but found it to be very simple to use. I used podomatic, which was user friendly. I didn't like that I couldn't preview my recording unless I saved it first. I like it to be the other way around. I couldn't think of anything to do at first. We are getting ready to do autobiographies, so I originally thought about that. I didn't like my recording and decided against. I also figured out that writing it down may be easier than trying to go off the top of my head. So, I decided to talk about Thanksgiving and end it with an assignment for the students to complete. 		+	I had heard of a podcast but was not sure what it was or how to do one. I was surprised about how easy it was to make. I watched the how to video and it was very informative. I chose to use Podomatic. The one problem I had was the same problem Odessa had. I wanted to preview my recording first but it would not allow you do that. 	Today, I tried creating podcasts with my students in the form of a book discussion. We once again recorded these with a microphone and changed the audio in Audacity. The students conversed with each other about a book that they have been reading in small groups. They will keep their podcasts going as we read new books throughout the period. We are then loading these podcasts onto their mp3 players and listening to them as an introduction to that book for a new group.
